Mikel Arteta will be hoping for some positive Arsenal injury updates before Sunday's Premier League clash against Liverpool. The Gunners have been significantly hampered by fitness absences already this season with at least one player guaranteed to miss out on featuring in this weekend's huge title showdown.

. As for other defensive absences, there is now significant doubt surrounding Riccardo Calafiori after he suffered a knee injury in Tuesday's Champions League win against Shakhtar Donetsk.

After slipping awkwardly in a dual, Calafiori immediately gestured to the bench and though he tried to play on, the Italy international went down again moments later and was replaced by Myles Lewis-Skelly. "With Riccy he had to come off because he felt something," "I don’t know the extent of it but it’s not good news."

and not feature in any training sessions. "At the moment I'm not very helpful," Arteta said when asked for the latest on Saka. "Let's see. We still have a few days. He wasn't able to train yet so that's unlikely [playing vs Liverpool]."

Elsewhere, Martin Odegaard has been all but confirmed as out after another Arteta update on his ankle issue picked up during the September international break. "I don’t think so [Odegaard fit to play Liverpool]," he said. "Martin is frustrated and desperate to return. But hopefully this period will teach him some things that are important in life."

Jurrien Timber is another key Arsenal star that could miss out because of injury with the Netherlands international having not been spotted since the Champions League triumph over Paris Saint-Germain back in early October. However, Arteta has suggested he is very close to returning and that could arrive this weekend.

Takehiro Tomiyasu has seemingly suffered an injury setback with the Japan international playing just six minutes this season. "We don’t know (how long he will be out for)," Arteta said recently. "It doesn’t look like, hopefully, a long period but we have to see when he comes back how he reacts to the load and to the impact on the pitch as well.

"But we really need him, he has been incredible, his work rate, the amount of hours he has put in to get back. He did it and he was in great shape - and now he has got something else again. But, we are all behind him. He needs our support and hopefully he will be fine."

Kieran Tierney is the final Arsenal player carrying an issue with the defender having not featured since suffering a serious hamstring injury while playing for Scotland at Euro 2024 this past summer.
