The process of filing Income Tax Return (ITR) is in full swing for taxpayers across the country. The Income Tax Department has extended the last date for ITR filing from July 31 to September 15, 2025, for the convenience of taxpayers. Now this date is fast approaching, and taxpayers have to file their returns as soon as possible. At present, taxpayers can file returns through ITR-1 and ITR-4 forms, but the Excel utilities of other forms like ITR-2 and ITR-3 have not been released yet.
Meanwhile, the Income Tax Department has updated the list of banks under the e-Pay Tax service on the e-Filing portal to provide more convenience to taxpayers. Now this list includes 31 banks, in which some new banks have been added and some have been migrated. This update will make tax payments easier by giving more options to taxpayers. Let us know about this new list and the process of tax payment in detail.
Make tax payments through these banks.
If you are thinking of making a tax payment through the e-Filing portal, then first know which banks you can use for this work. The Income Tax Department has recently updated its list, which now includes 31 banks.
Axis Bank, Bandhan Bank, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, City Union Bank, DCB Bank, Dhanlaxmi Bank, Federal Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, IDBI Bank, IDFC First Bank, Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, IndusInd Bank, Jammu and Kashmir Bank, Karnataka Bank, Karur Vysya Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Punjab and Sind Bank, Punjab National Bank, RBL Bank, South Indian Bank, UCO Bank, Union Bank of India
Apart from this, two new banks have been added to this list in 2025
Tamilnad Mercantile Bank (effective from 5 March 2025)
Yes Bank (effective from 27 June 2025)
These banks will provide a tax payment facility to taxpayers through the e-Filing portal, making the process faster and convenient.
Method of tax payment from unauthorized banks
If your bank is not included in this list of authorized banks, then there is no need to panic. You can make tax payment through NEFT/RTGS or a payment gateway. Currently, Bank of Maharashtra, Canara Bank, Federal Bank, State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank are providing this facility. Through these banks, you can easily pay tax using options like net banking, debit/credit card, or UPI.
Process of e-Pay Tax
To make the process of tax payment easier, the Income Tax Department has provided many facilities on the e-Filing portal. Taxpayers have to first go to the official website (www.incometax.gov.in). Here, by going to the Quick Links section, you have to generate the challan (CRN) using pre-login or post-login options. After generating the challan, you can make payment by net banking, debit/credit card, UPI, or by going to the bank counter. After payment, do not forget to include the details of the challan in the ITR, so that tax credit can be claimed.
What is e-Filing?
E-Filing means filing your income tax return online. It is a digital process that allows taxpayers to file returns from home. For this, you will need PAN-based login credentials. On the e-Filing portal, you get pre-filled data, step-by-step guides, and many other resources that make filing easier. Apart from this, options like Aadhaar OTP, Net Banking or Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) are also available for return verification. This process not only saves time but also ensures transparency.
