OpenAI Introduces Lightning-Fast GPT-4o Model, Replaces GPT-4 as Default from April 30

Send Push
Tech giant OpenAI has unveiled its latest breakthrough in AI development – the all-new GPT-4o model. Designed to outperform its predecessor GPT-4, this model offers enhanced speed, better accuracy, and significantly improved multimodal capabilities, making ChatGPT even more powerful and efficient than before. What Is GPT-4o and What Makes It Special?

OpenAI officially announced that GPT-4o will become the default model for ChatGPT from April 30, 2025. The "o" in GPT-4o stands for "omni," highlighting the model’s ability to understand and generate responses across multiple modalities including text, images, and even audio in future iterations.

While GPT-4 will still be accessible via the OpenAI API for developers, all ChatGPT Plus users will be automatically upgraded to GPT-4o without needing to change any settings.

How GPT-4o Is Better Than GPT-4

According to OpenAI, GPT-4o performs significantly better than GPT-4 in a wide range of tasks including:

  • Writing and content creation

  • Coding and debugging

  • Mathematical problem solving (STEM fields)

  • Conversational accuracy and flow

The model is also notably faster in generating responses, making interactions more seamless and efficient for users across the board.

A Costly but Strategic Upgrade

Training GPT-4o wasn’t cheap. As per reports by The Economic Times, OpenAI spent over $100 million in training the GPT-4 family of models. Despite such investments, OpenAI has faced criticism, notably from The New York Times, over alleged unauthorized use of its content for model training. OpenAI clarified that it only uses publicly available data to train its models.

Ghibli-Style Art Craze Overloads GPT-4

Just days before the launch of GPT-4o, OpenAI's platform witnessed a viral surge thanks to its new Ghibli-style art generator, which allowed users to create AI-powered animation-style images. The demand became so overwhelming that CEO Sam Altman had to temporarily advise users to reduce its usage to prevent system overload.

Final Thoughts: AI Just Got Even Smarter

With the launch of GPT-4o, OpenAI continues to lead the generative AI revolution. The upgrade is a clear indicator of how rapidly AI technology is evolving – bringing faster, smarter, and more dynamic tools to users across the globe.

As of April 30, users can expect faster problem-solving, smarter conversations, and better performance from ChatGPT – now powered by GPT-4o.
