Fresh from sweeping the panchayat elections, the BJP in Assam is setting its sights higher-on a larger mandate in the 2026 Assembly elections, including in seats dominated by minority communities.
After the NDA won 300 of 397 Zila Parishads and 1,436 of 2,192 Anchalik Panchayats in elections held on May 2 and 7 across 27 districts, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the party is now aiming to win 104 of the 126 Assembly seats next year.
"The panchayat results indicate a clear pro-incumbency wave. Compared to 2018, we've seen a broad increase of over 26% in both seats and vote share," Sarma said, calling the verdict a continuation of the momentum from the 2024 Lok Sabha results.
Of the 300 Zila Parishad seats won by the NDA, 274 went to BJP while its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) took 26. Among the Anchalik Panchayats, BJP won 1,265 and AGP 171. The Congress bagged 72 Zila Parishad seats.
Sarma said the party registered near-total wins in districts like Dibrugarh, Dhemaji, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Golaghat, and Jorhat. "We won 100% of Zila Parishad seats in several districts. Even in Muslim minority-dominated areas, we received substantial support," he said.
The BJP estimates that its vote share among indigenous Muslims has risen to between 60% and 70%. Muslims make up 34% of Assam's 3.12 crore population, with 4% being indigenous Assamese Muslims and the rest mostly Bengali-speaking.
