Israel launches airstrikes on Iran after October missile attack: Explosions reported in Tehran

Israel launched targeted airstrikes on Iranian military installations early Saturday, describing them as “precise strikes on military targets in Iran.” This operation was conducted in direct response to Iran’s ballistic missile assault on Israel, which occurred on October 1, according to statements from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). “The regime in Iran and its proxies in the region have been relentlessly attacking Israel since Oct. 7 – on seven fronts – including direct attacks from Iranian soil,” the IDF stated, further emphasizing that Israel reserves “the right and the duty to respond” to protect its sovereignty and people.

Israel-Iran War: Explosions reported in Tehran
The airstrikes led to powerful explosions across Tehran, with reports from Iranian state media confirming the sounds of blasts and noting that air defense systems had been deployed. Residents in Tehran reported at least seven explosions that shook the area.

“It was so loud, and the sky became red,” a local resident shared, describing the intensity of the strikes. The resident spoke anonymously, fearing repercussions. Media outlets in Iran attributed the explosions to defensive actions, explaining that air defense systems were targeting what they described as “hostile targets.”

However, Iran state TV says operations at Tehran airports are 'normal'.

The Tasnim news agency said that "nothing has been reported about hearing the sound of rockets or airplanes in the sky of Tehran so far".

State TV cited unnamed Iranian intelligence officials as saying that the origin of the loud explosions "could be from the activation of Iran's air defense system."

Iranian authorities have repeatedly warned Israel against launching an attack, saying any strike on Iran would be met with a stronger retaliation.

Israel-Iran War: Syria reports defensive actions
Alongside the attacks in Iran, Syrian state media also reported that their air defenses had responded to “hostile targets,” indicating a wider regional response. As the Israel-Iran conflict continues to spill over, tensions have remained high across the Middle East, particularly since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict on October 7. The ongoing hostilities have reportedly involved multiple Iranian-backed groups operating across various fronts against Israel.

US urges restraint while monitoring Israel's operations
This escalation coincides with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s return from a diplomatic mission in the Middle East, where U.S. officials had expressed concern over potential conflict intensification. They advised Israel to conduct any retaliatory measures with caution, specifically advising against actions that could further destabilize the region or affect nuclear facilities.

In response to Saturday’s airstrikes, White House National Security Council spokesperson Sean Savett stated, “We understand that Israel is conducting targeted strikes against military targets in Iran,” redirecting inquiries to Israeli authorities for additional details.

The United States was notified by Israel ahead of its operation against targets in Iran, a U.S. official told Reuters on Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The official added there was no U.S. involvement in the Israeli operation.

Israel-Iran War escalates over recent attacks
These airstrikes follow Israel’s announcement that it would retaliate for Iran’s missile assault on October 1. This marks the second direct confrontation involving missile attacks between Israel and Iran within a six-month span. Iranian officials have maintained a firm stance, with warnings that any offensive action would “be met with a stronger retaliation.” Since October 7, the IDF claims Iran and affiliated groups have engaged in continuous assaults on Israel, spanning seven different fronts.
