Brits on holiday inspired to make major life decisions - like having a baby

New research has shown that we make some of our most pivotal life decisions whilst basking in the sunshine on holiday. A survey of 2,000 adults found that more than three-fifths believe a getaway can be 'transformative'. As a result, four in 10 have made a major life decision during their travels.

More than a quarter of holidaymakers have decided it was a time for career change while they were on holiday. Meanwhile, a fifth realised it was time to have a baby. Other 'transformative' choices included deciding to launch a new business, move house or even end a relationship.

The study, commissioned by online travel agent loveholidays, discovered Brits believe that feeling more relaxed on holiday makes it easier to think more clearly. A quarter also reckon the sunshine provides the mental clarity they need when they are away from home.

The holiday provider teamed up with psychologist Jo Hemmings, who explained: "Holidays have a transformational power.

"When we step away from our routines, something magical happens; we give ourselves the freedom to see clearly, think differently, and make decisions with a fresh perspective."

"Many Brits believe that people are more honest with themselves when on holiday, indicating that it's not just about escaping the daily grind of life, but about creating the mental space where clarity emerges and challenging choices feel possible.

"Free from pressures, problems and distractions, people find themselves making career moves, relationship choices, and setting personal goals with newfound clarity."

Over half of those who made a significant decision whilst on holiday but failed to follow through, ended up regretting it.

Jo Hemmings added: "It's compelling to see how many of us consider holidays to be life-changing, a testament to their significance and the trust we place in them to transform the everyday.

"Different destinations can offer different kinds of clarity. Whether it's the relaxing nature of a luxury all inclusive, or the buzz of a bustling city, holidays help people step outside their usual mindset and return with a renewed sense of direction."

Holidaymakers are more likely to feel reflective on a beach break (37 per cent), or a luxury all inclusive (22 per cent), and 21 per cent even felt they did the most reflection when travelling solo.
