Ruben Amorim stance on QUITTING Man Utd after 'something has to change' comments

Ruben Amorim sparked fresh scrutiny over his future with his comments after Manchester United's humbling exit from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Grimsby Town.

United were dumped out of a tournament they won two years ago at the first hurdle by the League Two outfit, who deserved to advance in normal time after taking a 2-0 lead. Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire denied them such a feat, but the Mariners deservedly prevailed on penalties. While Grimsby revelled in the moment, United were left to contemplate a shocking new low.

A shell-shocked Amorim offered no excuses after the game and some of his comments have fuelled speculation on social media that the former Sporting Lisbon chief could contemplate his own future. He conceded "something has to change" but it would not be "22 players again".

“I think this is a little bit the limit. I think something has to change,” Amorim said during an honest post-match assessment. “I think the team and the players spoke really loud today, so that’s it. [Tonight] I think the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch.

“I think it's really clear what they spoke, so let's move on from this day. I think it was clear for everybody what happened today. The way we start the game without any intensity, we were completely lost. In this moment, we need to focus on the weekend and then we have time to think.”

With speculation over Amorim's future rife on social media following the Grimsby game, his post-match comments are a far cry from his response when people questioned him after Manchester United's defeat in the Europa League final back in May.

In the aftermath of that loss against Tottenham, Amorim insisted he would walk away for free if fans or the top brass at Manchester United were to lose faith in him as the club's head coach.

He said defiantly at the time: “If the board and the fans feel I'm not the right guy, I will go in the next day without any conversation about compensation. But I will not quit again. I am confident in my job. As you see, I will not change anything in the way I do things.

“In this moment, I am not here to defend myself. It's not my style. I have nothing to show to the fans. In this moment [I need] a little bit of faith.”
