Whenever a big storm comes, we hear a different and unique name for it. But have you ever wondered how and by whom the names of these storms are chosen? Are there any special rules for this? Come, let's know about this whole process...

Who gets the responsibility of choosing the name of the storm? The responsibility of choosing the name of the storms does not lie with any one country. Instead, this work is done with some special centers called 'Regional Hurricane Centers'. These centers work under the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Their main job is to monitor storms and provide information about them.

What is the process of naming storms? Every ocean region has one or more regional storm centers. These centers monitor the activity of storms and also name them.

How is the naming list prepared? Every regional hurricane center already has a list of names. This list includes names given by different countries. When a new hurricane forms, a name is chosen from that list. But care is taken to keep the name short and easy to remember. The name should not insult any particular group, person, or religion.

What is the role of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)? The job of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is to keep this entire naming process uniform. WMO ensures that all regional centers follow the same rules and there is no confusion in choosing the names of storms. In this way, whenever a new storm comes, it is given a name that everyone can easily remember and that is not objectionable to anyone.

Are names repeated? If a storm proves to be extremely damaging, its name is not used again in the future. Another name is added to the list in its place.

Why are storms named? The main purpose of naming storms is that people can remember them easily and take the warnings related to that storm seriously. If every storm was given a number, it would be difficult to remember it. Naming also makes communication easier.
