Mamnoor Airport in Warangal Set to Revitalize Telangana's Aviation Sector by 2024

Mamnoor Airport in Warangal is expectedto begin operations by the end of 2024, representing a major advancement in Telangana’s aviation landscape. This airport will be the first of six planned airports in the state, situated about 170 km from Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The Mamnoor facility, which has remained inactive since 1980, aims to facilitate services under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS-Udan).

Currently, 700 acres of land are allocated for the airport by the Airport Authority of India, with the Telangana government working to acquire an additional 200 acres. A government source said, "The collector has been instructed to rehabilitate about 40 to 50 households to an alternate site nearby. This should be done soon."

The initial phase of development will also include airports in Adilabad and Nizamabad. "In both places, the government has identified 1,000 acres for the project, in addition to the existing land parcel, and work on launching them has picked up pace, especially after Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy's recent trips to New Delhi. The Union civil aviation ministry has assured support for the airport projects," the source added.

Although Bhadrachalam was initially slated for development in this phase, plans have encountered difficulties due to its challenging terrain. Sources indicated that the hills surrounding this forest area rendered the original site unfeasible. "Authorities have identified two or three alternate sites, which will soon be reviewed by officials from the road and buildings and state aviation departments. Once they give the go-ahead, the airport plan will be launched," the source added.

Conversely, the airport projects in Devarakadra (Mahbubnagar) and Basanthnagar (Ramagundam) are currently on hold due to multiple issues, including unsuitable terrain and proximity to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.

The Mamnoor Airport project signifies a crucial step in enhancing regional connectivity and travel options in Telangana, with the potential to uplift local economies and improve accessibility.
