Yoga Guru R. Sharath Jois Passes Away at 53 in USA

R. Sharath Jois, a renowned Ashtanga yoga teacher from Mysuru, passed away in Virginia, USA, on November 11 at the age of 53 due to cardiac arrest. He was the grandson of the legendary Yoga Guru, the late K. Pattabhi Jois, and continued to carry forward the Ashtanga yoga tradition.

Born on September 29, 1971, in Mysuru, Sharath Jois was immersed in yoga from an early age, being the son of Saraswathi and Rangaswamy. By the age of seven, he had begun practicing asanas, and under the guidance of his grandfather, he advanced his knowledge of yoga's primary and intermediate series.

Despite pursuing a diploma in electronics at JSS College in Mysuru, Sharath felt his true calling was in yoga. At 19, he made yoga his life's purpose, waking up at 3:30 am daily to study and assist his grandfather at the Lakshmipuram Yoga School and later in Gokulam.

Sharath's dedication to the practice was unmatched. He would rise at 1 am six days a week to complete his personal practice before teaching others at his own Sharath Yoga Centre in Mysuru. His commitment to Ashtanga yoga was admired worldwide, with celebrities like Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Sting among his many students.

A true ambassador of Ashtanga, Sharath carried the legacy of his grandfather with humility and kindness, inspiring countless individuals globally. He is survived by his wife Shruthi, daughter Shraddha, and son Sambhav.
