Just days after the US Government shutdown, CBS aired a furious row in which Speaker Mike Johnson blasted the Democrats over claims that they want to fund free healthcare for illegal immigrants. The politician joined the debate via video link live from Washington's Capitol Hill, where he sided with President Donald Trump and blamed the opposition party for the Government shutdown. Johnson fumed: "You know what they want to counterpropose? They want to spend $1.5 trillion, and they want to return hard-working taxpayer dollars to fund healthcare for illegal aliens."
He claimed: "It is in their bill, go to speaker.gov and see it for yourself, page 57, section 21, 41. "They're using this for political games, and it is shameful and real people are getting hurt." However, Margaret refuted this and hit back: "I have looked at that text, and it doesn't explicitly say what you are indicating, but unauthorised immigrants aren't eligible for ACA benefits." As she attempted to finish her point, the pair clashed as Johnson abruptly interrupted: "Wait a minute, hold on, very important. Yes, it does."
The Speaker continued: "It says very simply, they want to repeal the changes that we made in the working family tax cuts, in the one big beautiful bill."
As Margaret agreed: "That's right." He went on: "What those changes were, is that it removed healthcare going to illegal aliens.
"It removed all the fraud, waste and abuse and the congressional budget office, CBO said it achieved the desired result.
"They projected it would save almost $200 billion, Chuck Schumer's proposal on page 57 wants to return that $2 billion of taxpayer funds to pay for illegal aliens and other non-citizens that is a fact."
Johnson added: "And you can check it out on my website, don't trust me, look at Chuck Schumer's own paperwork."
According to the BBC, the Senate Democrats refused to support a Republican proposal to extend government funding and avoid the shutdown due to their concerns over health provision.
Instead, they want to extend enhancements to health insurance subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, which are set to expire at the end of the year.
However, if they do expire, the average insurance premium payment for those on the scheme is set to more than double, external, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) health think tank.
Vice President JD Vance said Democrats "want to shut the government because we won't give billions of dollars in healthcare funding for illegal aliens".
President Trump posted on Truth Social: "The Democrats want to give your healthcare money to illegal aliens."
