Juicy peaches are one of the most delicious fruits, versatile enough to be eaten on their own or in both savoury and sweet recipe.. However, keeping them at their best can be tricky, as many people find their peaches turn mealy, wrinkle too quickly, or fail to ripen properly.
The storage method you choose can make all the difference, and it depends entirely on whether your peaches are ripe or not. According to storage expert Vlatka Lake from SpaceStation, getting this balance wrong can cause fruit to lose its flavour and texture. She told Express.co.uk how to prevent this issue while revealing a simple yet powerful way to get peaches to ripen quickly.
She said: "If you have bought peaches that are not quite ripe yet, then you should always store them at room temperature, ideally on your kitchen countertop.
"This is because refrigeration can slow down your peaches' natural ripening process, leading to dehydration and unsightly wrinkling."
To speed things up, Vlatka explained: "If your peaches are exceptionally hard and you want to enjoy them sooner, simply pop them in a paper bag to trap the natural ripening gases that your peach emits.
"You could even include other ethylene-producing fruits, such as apples or bananas, in the bag, as this will further speed up the ripening process."
The storage expert also noted that "you should also aim to avoid contact between each individual peach, if you have enough space to do so, as they easily bruise, which can lead to your peaches spoiling faster."
Once the fruit reaches perfect ripeness, you need a change of method to avoid overdoing it.
Vlatka continued: "If your peaches are already ripe, then you should store them in the fridge until you are ready to eat them.
"For the best taste and texture, you should aim to do this within one to three days and keep them as separate from other fruits and vegetables as your fridge allows."
