Sky News halts for Donald Trump 'breaking news' - and it could be huge blow for Starmer

Sky News interrupted their programming on Sunday July, 27 as Scotland correspondent Connor Gillies asked US President Donald Trump what the chances of a deal between the US and Europe were while he played golf at his Trump Turnberry resort in Scotland.

Trump is due to meet European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for talks on the trading relationship between Europe and the US today. Tomorrow he will meet Sir Keir Starmer, with the two leaders expected to discuss the recent trade deal between the UK and US.

Reports suggest that during his next meeting with the President, Sir Keir is expected to make a direct appeal for Trump to cut tariffs on UK steel a move that would offer a lifeline to Britain's struggling manufacturing industry. However it appears, Trump is yet to make any promises, which raises fears that he could walk away or slap penalties on UK exports.

When asked about a deal, Trump said the chances were "50/50."

Earlier this year, the UK and US signed a trade deal slashing tariffs on cars and aerospace, offering a much-needed boost to British industry. In May, the White House signalled plans to exempt Britain from a punishing 25% global tariff on steel but that exemption has still not been bound.

If the UK exemption collapses under Trump, thousands of jobs could hang in the balance. However Trump appeared carefree as he spent some time at his South Ayrshire resort, before heading to Aberdeenshire, where he is expected to open a second course at his Trump International golf resort in Balmedie.

Pro-Trump, anti-Starmer demonstrators looked on from the beach, carrying signs with derogatory messages about the UK prime minister Sir Keir Starmer. The resort is ringed by dozens of police officers and a steel fence.

He told the press "it's great to be in Scotland" as a major security operation was ramped up at Turnberry before Trump played 18 holes on Saturday.

Trump was seen waving to photographers and the assembled media as his day passed without anything going awry, however several roads remain closed in the area while police and military personnel carried out checks around the resort. The pricey trip is said to have cost US tax-payers millions of dollars.
