Spain weather warning with 'extreme heat' set to hit 8 holiday hotspots

Summer is arriving early in , with the weather set to from today. Almost the entire country is set to bake in unprecedented temperatures for this time of year from today, Wednesday, May 28.

In areas including the lower Guadalquivir in , temperatures could reach as high as 40C on Thursday. According to the state meteorological agency, AEMET, temperatures will approach summer levels for the rest of May, with not ruled out. The agency expects the to arrive between Friday and Sunday, not reaching such high levels in late May and early June since at least 1950.

Yellow warnings for temperatures up to 36C in parts of , which includes Barcelona, and Andalusia have also been issued - the first such alerts of the year.

"The arrival of a very warm air mass from North Africa will cause an additional rise in temperatures to that already caused by the stable and anticyclonic weather that favours strong sunshine and land warming of the land," said Aemet spokesperson, Ruben del Campo.

Nightfall will not bring much cooler temperatures, with the arrival of 2025's first tropical nights. Last week, minimums only fell to 20C in the Valencian community, following similar temperatures in the earlier this month.

Sweltering overnight temperatures are expected to hit on Wednesday into Thursday in parts of the Guadalquivir valley, the south of the province, as well as Cordoba and Jaen provinces, with lows of 22C at sunrise.

The southern part of the Valencian Community and coastal spots in Andalusia, including , are also predicted to experience a tropical night.

Temperatures are expected to exceed 35C in several areas across the country, including , Aragon, Castilla-La Mancha and the Miño Valley.

However, the heatwave will not stick around for long, as next week will see a "notable drop in temperatures", according to Ruben del Campo.
