The beautiful European city loved by tourists and filled with independent shops

It can be a bit tiresome seeing the same big brand shops everywhere you visit. However, one popular European city is filled with vibrant independent businesses, including bookshops, eateries, and clothes stores.

Amsterdam attracts around 20 million tourists every year. It's particularly popular among Brits due to its close proximity to the UK. The city is unique and has the perfect blend of culture, tradition, and vibrancy. It also boasts a number of thriving independent shops, making it the perfect place for tourists to have a stroll around.

Lonely Planet has shared five of the best independent shops in Amsterdam, according to local writer Lily Heaton. Areas of the city such as Nine Streets and Haarlemmerstraat are known for their unique stores and boutiques.

Lily said: "Despite the growing presence of upmarket shops, Amsterdam has successfully maintained its free-spirited and alternative energy. You'll still find a wide variety of independently owned shops, hidden away along the cobblestone streets of the compact Dutch capital."

According to Lily, the best souvenir shop in Amsterdam is The Maker's Store. It sells a range of art, homeware, clothing, books and jewellery from locals.

They also hold a monthly Makers Market where vendors can display their products. It is located inside De Hallen, a renovated tram depot.

Lily says the best shop for local design in Amsterdam is X Bank. Located in the city centre, the store sells hundreds of brands from across the area.

She said: "It's a cool place to explore even for aesthetics. X BANK shares a building with W Amsterdam, and inside the building (a historic bank), nods to its previous function are still evident, including antique safety deposit boxes that form the cashier's desk."

Meanwhile, the best shop for vintage clothing is reportedly Penny Lane. It is located in the lively De Pijp area which also homes a number of trendy bars and concept shop.

Lily said: "There are several flea markets and second-hand shops across Amsterdam, but Penny Lane Vintage is my favorite. You'll definitely find something special here among the handpicked assortment of neutral-toned trench coats, colorful knitwear, statement sunglasses and silk scarves."

She adds that the best bookshop in Amsterdam is the American Book Centre. The family-owned store has been operating in the city for over 40 years.

It has three floors packed with books as well as a selection of magazines. They also have a cosy cafe for visitors to enjoy.

Lastly, the best independent business for food is De Kaaskamer. Lily says they sell a delicious charcuterie board and a number of fresh sandwiches.

She said: "It's often busy inside, but I find the staff are happy to help me find the perfect cheese for a dinner party, boat ride, or picnic. I recently took home a chunk of Parmigiano Reggiano (€6) and a bottle of Pino Grigio (€10) to complete our meal."
