If you're dreaming of some late-year sunshine while Britain braces for rain and colder temperatures, there's a Mediterranean gem just a few hours away where summer never really ends. Cyprus, particularly the seaside city of Paphos, is the perfect antidote to the gloomy days of November. With highs reaching around 23C, according to TUI, the island offers warm weather, golden beaches, and a relaxed pace that makes it one of Europe's best winter escapes.
Paphos is just a direct flight away and takes around four hours. The city was recently named the world's most liveable small city, thanks to its great mix of culture, affordability, safety, and quality of life.
With 27 beaches, ancient history on every corner, and restaurants serving some of the best Mediterranean food around, it's easy to see why people love it.
You can spend your mornings at quiet beaches like Nissi Beach, or dive into the city's rich past by visiting the Tombs of the Kings, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 4th century BC. The Kato Paphos Archaeological Park is another must-see, filled with impressive Roman mosaics and ancient ruins.
Paphos is also home to Aphrodite's Rock, which is said to be the legendary birthplace of the Greek goddess of love and beauty.
After exploring, you can enjoy fresh Cypriot food, grilled halloumi, souvlaki, and kleftiko, which are local favourites, and maybe try Commandaria, a sweet wine that's been made on the island for thousands of years and is the world's oldest continually produced wine.
Another landmark is Paphos Castle, which sits right on the edge of the harbour. Originally built as a Byzantine fort to protect the port, it has been rebuilt several times over the centuries by the Lusignans, Venetians and Ottomans.
The castle is one of Paphos' most popular tourist attractions. Visitors can walk around its stone walls, climb to the top for views over the sea, and explore the small exhibitions inside.
As the sun sets, the castle and harbour area come alive with restaurants and cafes, making for the perfect place to end the day with a drink overlooking the water.
One TripAdvisor wrote about Kato Paphos Archaeological Park: "If you are in Cyprus, this place is a must-visit. From magnificent Roman mosaics to the Odeon, Agora, ancient villas and sanctuaries, every step here brings the island closer to history.
"We spent a few hours in the park, and it was like walking through a huge open-air museum. The mosaics are simply admirable - especially in the House of Dionysus, where the paints and details have survived for almost 1,700 years!"
One TikTokker also called Paphos the "most beautiful place" while another British traveller said about Viklari restaurant that it "seriously is the best food [they've] ever tasted."
Viklari, also known as The Last Castle, is an open-air taverna with incredible sea views and delicious traditional Cypriot food and local wines.
