Manchester United are optimistic about securing a deal for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo in time for pre-season training, according to reports. The Red Devils have tabled a second offer for Mbeumo, said to be around £55million, with the delay in finalising the deal due to the add-ons involved.
According to the Mirror, Brentford want the total package to potentially reach as much as £63m, exceeding the £62.5m United shelled out to Wolves for Matheus Cunha. Despite interest from his former Brentford manager, Thomas Frank, at Tottenham Hotspur, Mbeumo is keen on a move to Old Trafford.
It's claimed that personal terms between United and Mbeumo have been agreed, with the 25-year-old set to pocket around £200,000 per week.
With pre-season training commencing on July 7, United boss Ruben Amorim is eager to have Mbeumo and Cunha integrated into the squad as soon as possible.
Mbeumo, who transferred to Brentford for £5.8m from French club Troyes in 2019, netted 20 goals and provided eight assists last season, helping the Bees secure a 10th-place finish in the Premier League - five spots above United.
After signing Cunha, United have pinpointed winger Mbeumo as their next summer acquisition, with Amorim and the club planning to offload current wide players Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony.
United's quest for a forward to lead their attack hit a stumbling block, with targets slipping away to rivals; Liam Delap has made a switch to Chelsea from Ipswich, and Sporting Lisbon's goal scorer, Viktor Gyokeres, has his eyes set on Arsenal, attracted by the prospect of Champions League football.
Meanwhile, for only the second time in 35 years, Old Trafford will miss the sound of European football anthems, as the team failed to secure its place after a defeat to Spurs in the Europa League final.
The North London club, under the leadership of newly appointed Frank, are securing their Champions League berth.
The influential mentor encouraged Brentford to hold their ground for a substantial fee for the Cameroonian sensation in light of his impressive season.
Speaking with Danish outlet Tipsbladet before setting sail to Tottenham, the ex-Brentford boss remarked: "It is clear that if he is to be sold, it must be for a nice, nice amount.
"It is a lot. Mucho. Really a lot. Then it is clear that it is impossible to replace him one for one. It cannot be done.
"There is a reason why he costs X number of million pounds, and we do not have X number of million pounds to buy for.
"I would say that I would be surprised if a lot of big clubs don't look at him. I would be surprised with what he has to offer. How many wingers score 20 goals for a mid-table club?
"And then with seven assists plus his work ethic. And his character. All these things mean that he has a lot, so he is a good player."
