A holiday-maker's worst nightmare came true when they couldn't board their flight for one frustrating reason. The busiest travel time of the year is fast approaching, with huge numbers of Brits flying to places like , , Italy and Turkey to catch some sunshine and enjoy hot temperatures. However, everything doesn't always go to plan - and sometimes a holiday can be ruined by travel difficulties.
One TikTok user says he was booked onto a flight - but never ended up boarding. The video creator, @scott.morelifecoaching, said that he arrived at the gate for boarding and was told to wait off to one side. Other people who had booked specific seats were boarded, but he had to remain waiting. He then claimed that because he and his travel companion were the last to check in - and because they hadn't reserved seats - there was only one seat remaining. He said that it feels like a "scam" by Ryanair and revealed that they kept referring to their T&Cs.
Ryanair told the Daily Express: "As a policy, Ryanair does not overbook flights." The airline did not address the other claims made in the video. Ryanair states that there are rare occasions when a passenger with a confirmed reservation might not be able to board.
Their policy states: "In the unlikely event that a seat is not available for a passenger with a confirmed reservation, we will seek volunteers to surrender their seats in exchange for benefits that we and the volunteer may agree upon before involuntarily denying boarding to other passengers."
According to the UK Civil Aviation Authority, airlines sometimes "book more people onto a flight than there are seats on the plane". They explain that "this is because people don't always turn up - despite having booked a flight".
The TikTok user then revealed that he waited 50 minutes to receive their cases from the flight that they never boarded. He then claimed that they were told by airline staff that only one of the reservations would be compensated and that they would have to buy another.
Ryaniar's policy states that passengers who are denied boarding for their flight are entitled to a number of options when it comes to compensation. This includes €250 (around £209) in respect of all flights of 1,500km or less or €400 (around £339) in respect of all intra-EU flights of more than 1,500km, and for all other flights between 1,500km and 3,500km.
Meanwhile, passengers can receive reimbursement in accordance with Article 7(3) of the Regulation, rerouting under comparable transport conditions to their final destination as soon as possible or at a later date at their convenience, subject to seat availability.
