LUCKNOW: A married woman who was caught meeting her lover, was forcibly made to marry him at a temple in Ghazipur district on Wednesday in Jamuwav village under Karanda police station. A video of the incident surfaced on Friday.
Police said the woman's husband, along with family members and villagers, tied the woman and her lover with ropes and paraded them to a temple. There, the lover was forced to fill vermilion in the woman's hairline.
The woman, identified as Priyanka Kumari (20), is married to Rohit Kumar (22) of Jamuwav village. The couple were living in Noida after their wedding in 2023, where Rohit works in a private company. A resident of Ari Paharpur village, Pintu Gond (21) was also employed in the same company. Pintu frequently visited Rohit's house and developed a relationship with Priyanka.
A few days ago, the couple returned to their village. On Wednesday, Priyanka called Pintu and met him in a field. The two were spotted by villagers, who informed the family. Rohit, along with others, reached the spot and brought them to the village Kali temple.
When Priyanka and Pintu insisted they wanted to be together, Rohit and his family decided to conduct a wedding ceremony.
Thereafter, Priyanka approached the police station along with Pintu and lodged a complaint against her husband Rohit and 10 others for harassment and coercion. She claimed she was humiliated and forced into a temple wedding without her consent.
Meanwhile, Rohit alleged that he often saw Priyanka and Pintu together but was threatened by Pintu to stay silent. He also claimed that the duo attempted to strangle him multiple times. Rohit said he chose not to escalate the matter further and instead facilitated the temple wedding to avoid further conflict.
Karanda SHO Mahendra Pratap Singh said that under the law, a second marriage without legal divorce from the first is invalid. He confirmed that an FIR has been registered on the woman's complaint and added that if Rohit files a counter-complaint, further investigation and legal action will be taken accordingly.
