COIMBATORE: An octogenarian woman was murdered by her grandson at Sundarapuram in Coimbatore city on Monday afternoon when she refused to give him the money he demanded.
The murdered woman has been identified as Manonmani, 80, wife of Rangaraj of Sathyamoorthy Nagar at Sundarapuram.
Her son Murugesan died in a road accident in Velanthavalam area in Coimbatore district three years ago.
The family members of Murugesan filed a motor claims original petition before a special court. In November 2024, the family received a compensation of Rs 15 lakh. After paying the lawyer fee, the remaining amount was divided among the family members. Murugesan’s widow Lakshmi, 43, received Rs 6 lakh, his elder son Sivakumar got Rs 1.5 lakh, his younger son Vishnu was given Rs 1.5 lakh, and Manonmani got Rs 1.5 lakh.
Sivakumar demanded that his grandmother hand over Rs 1.5 lakh to him. He often fought with her to get the money.
Around 1.30pm on Monday, Sivakumar asked her to give him the money, and the elderly woman refused to hand it over to him. In a fit of rage, he took a knife, slit her throat and escaped from the house.
The woman sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where doctors declared her dead.
The Sundarapuram police registered a murder case and formed a special team to nab Sivakumar.
