Panaji: A 50-year-old man allegedly raped an 80-year-old woman who lives alone in North Goa. He was attempting to sexually abuse her for the second time — an assault that was stopped only by the arrival of her family.

Police said they have arrested the accused, who after quitting his overseas job as a technician, had been living in Goa for many years.

The woman lived alone in a small house after her daughters got married, police said. They added that the woman is cared for by one of her daughters.

This daughter sends food and other necessary items to her mother daily, police said. When the survivor’s granddaughter came to deliver lunch on Friday, the survivor narrated her ordeal.

The granddaughter immediately told her parents. According to police, the survivor said an unknown person had sexually abused her on Thursday night.

Police said when the woman’s daughter arrived at the survivor’s house soon after learning about the attack, she saw that the accused was nude and was trying to sexually abuse her mother.

The daughter immediately called her husband, police said, who was already on his way to the survivor’s home.

The son-in-law tried to nab the accused, who managed to escape. Police said the accused subsequently hid in some bushes in the area. After the family of the survivor called police, the accused was found and arrested.

Police said the accused stayed alone as his wife had left him. Police said the survivor’s statement has been recorded in the presence of an NGO’s representatives. The accused has been remanded in four-day police custody.
