SHIVAMOGGA: BJP representatives from Shivamogga, led by MLA S.N. Channabasappa, petitioned SP Mithun Kumar to register criminal charges against Muslim community leaders who organised a demonstration opposing the amendments to the Waqf Act.
The demonstration took place in the city during the previous week, which the BJP leaders contended was illegal.
The protestors assembled before the DC office on May 3 to voice their opposition to the Waqf Act amendment. The gathering resulted in road blockages, disrupted civilian movement, and featured inflammatory speeches at the public assembly.
Given that the Waqf Act is under judicial consideration, demonstrations regarding this matter are prohibited. The court has specifically directed against providing facilities for such protests.
Despite these restrictions, the demonstration proceeded, with authorities providing both facilities and security arrangements, they stated. The BJP leaders demanded criminal charges against all participants involved.
"Despite the court directives, protests occurred across various locations in the state, including Shivamogga. To uphold judicial authority, those involved in the protests should face legal consequences," MLA Channabasappa told reporters.
