Rajkot: A double tragedy struck the Mukadam family in Porbandar when 34-year-old Yusuf Mukadam was killed in a road accident while on his way to attend his mother's last rites, just hours after her passing.
Yusuf Mukadam, who worked for a company in Ahmedabad, had left for Rajkot on getting the news about his mother's death. From Rajkot, he was to take a bus to Porbandar, around 185km, a journey that takes three and a half hours.
Mukadam got off at Greenland Chowkdi, the entry point to Rajkot for vehicles coming from Ahmedabad, and took a rickshaw to Gondal Crossroad, from where buses leave for Porbandar.
At about 5.30am, the rickshaw, carrying six or seven passengers, had reached Yuvrajnagar when a speeding car rammed into it from behind. The rickshaw overturned from the collision and the passengers were flung onto the road.
Bystanders called the 108 emergency service and whose paramedics rushed Mukadam and three other injured persons to Civil Hospital, where Yusuf was declared dead upon arrival.
"According to our information, Mukadam was going to Porbandar for his mother's burial. The car driver fled the scene, and police have launched a manhunt for him," a source in Aji Dam police told TOI.
The FIR, lodged by one of the injured persons, said those affected by the accident were a couple seated next to the complainant, two men in the back seat, and two others seated beside the driver.
