RMC prepares plans to decongest roads

Ranchi: Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has launched an initiative to regulate street vending activities with an aim to address traffic congestion issues in the state capital. The move comes as a response to the growing concerns over the impact of unregulated vending on urban mobility and traffic flow. The RMC has identified three locations — Purulia Road, near Yogda Satsang Police Station, and near Surendra Cemetery School - and has prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the initiative.

The DPR outlines the RMC's objectives, which include improving traffic management, ensuring vendor compliance with regulations, and creating a cleaner and more organized environment for both vendors and consumers. The corporation is also conducting awareness campaigns to educate vendors about the regulations and the importance of adhering to designated zones.

Nikesh Kumar, the assistant administrator, said, “The RMC has identified specific vending zones throughout the city. This decision is grounded in a Detailed Project Report (DPR) that outlines the logistics and benefits of designated vending areas. By relocating vendors from non-vending zones, the initiative seeks to create a more organized and efficient urban landscape.”

Gini Kumari, a resident of Sujata Chowk, highlighted the challenges faced by the city due to congestion caused by street vendors. She said, “The congestion caused by street vendors has long been a challenge for the city. Many vendors set up shops in high-traffic areas, obstructing roads and sidewalks, which often leads to bottlenecks and delays for motorists and pedestrians alike.”

Nikesh Kumar emphasized that the initiative is not only about reducing congestion but also about supporting local entrepreneurs while ensuring safe and accessible roads for all.

In addition to the three locations already identified, the RMC has pinpointed six more locations — Bariatu, Rims, ITI, Hinoo, Mecon, and Birsa Chowk - that will be developed into designated vending zones. The RMC is currently in the process of obtaining Non-Objection Certificates (NOCs) from the relevant authorities to facilitate this expansion.

The initiative also includes plans for infrastructure improvements in the identified vending areas, such as better waste management facilities and amenities to support the vendors.
