Vadodara: A BJP worker and former chairman of the primary education committee, Dilipsinh Gohil, was arrested by city police at Ahmedabad airport on Thursday. Gohil, accused of cheating BJP councillor Parakramsinh Jadeja, had fled to Dubai and later travelled to Canada and Thailand after a complaint was lodged against him in Jan.
He was named in two separate cheating cases registered at Sama police station and the detection of crime branch (DCB). "We issued a lookout notice after learning that he had left the country. Gohil returned to Ahmedabad on Thursday, and our team was alerted by airport authorities. He was arrested," said Narasimha Komar, city police commissioner.
Police said Gohil and his associate Kamlesh Detroja planned the fraud together. Gohil introduced Detroja to Jadeja. In 2024, Detroja claimed that he wanted to sell land in Morbi belonging to his uncle and that he had been given the right to do so. He also said that he and Gohil were now partners and wanted to sell the plot for Rs 1.24 crore.
Jadeja paid Rs 21 lakh to the two men for the deal but asked them to bring the landowner to sign the sale deed. The duo said the owner was unwell and would sign later. Days later, they brought sale documents and asked Jadeja to sign. When Jadeja checked the papers and photo, he got suspicious and found the signature to be fake.
Jadeja later found that the real landowner was someone else and that he had been cheated. He filed a complaint against Gohil, Detroja, and another accused, Jamji Sodha.
The two were also accused of cheating Ramesh Patel, a priest from Waghodia taluka, on the pretext of selling land. Patel paid Rs 1.04 crore, but no land was transferred to him. "Police made strong efforts to trace and arrest Gohil," Jadeja said.
