Detailed pattern of NORCET Stage I examination
Stage I, the NORCET Preliminary examination, is a qualifying paper that determines a candidate’s eligibility to appear for Stage II, the NORCET Main examination. It will be a computer-based test of 90 minutes duration.
The paper comprises 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), carrying one mark each. These will include 20 questions related to General Knowledge and Aptitude, and 80 questions based on the Nursing syllabus as per the essential qualification level. Each question will have four alternatives, and a negative marking of 1/3 marks will be applicable for every incorrect answer.
Section-wise division and time allocation
The question paper is divided into five distinct sections. Each section will be active for 18 minutes and will include 20 questions. Candidates will only be allowed to answer questions within the currently active section, and once the time lapses, the section will automatically close and the next one will open.
It is important to note that previously attempted sections cannot be revisited, and any unanswered or marked-for-review questions will be locked after the time limit ends. The system will auto-submit the paper once the total exam time of 90 minutes concludes.
Qualifying criteria and percentile cut-offs
The minimum qualifying percentile for different categories in Stage I is as follows:
• UR/EWS: 50 percentile
• OBC: 45 percentile
• SC/ST: 40 percentile
For candidates belonging to the Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PWBD) category, a further 5 percentile relaxation is applicable irrespective of category. Accordingly, the qualifying percentiles for PWBD candidates are:
• UR/EWS-PWBD: 45 percentile
• OBC-PWBD: 40 percentile
• SC/ST-PWBD: 35 percentile
As per the Department of Personnel and Training (DOPT) office memorandum No. 36035/02/2017-Estt (Res) dated January 15, 2018, the same relaxed standards will be applied uniformly to all candidates with benchmark disabilities, irrespective of their category.
Shortlisting process for Stage II examination
Candidates who qualify in Stage I will be shortlisted for the Stage II examination in a ratio of five times the total available seats in each respective category (UR, OBC, SC, ST, EWS). In addition, all qualified PWBD candidates will automatically be called for Stage II.
Tie cases involving the last qualifying candidate will also be considered for advancement to Stage II. However, it is possible for a candidate to meet the qualifying percentile yet not be called for Stage II due to the limitations on the number of shortlisted candidates.
