Nicole Kidman on shooting 'Babygirl': 'A very vivid experience that had me jumping off the cliff'

Nicole Kidman has appeared in films here and elsewhere recently, including a special screening of her new film 'Babygirl' in Los Angeles with co-star Harris Dickinson and director Halina Reijn. Speaking there about doing the erotic thriller, she said this one has already been feted with some of the highest acclaim of her career. Her performance hasn't gone unnoticed - after its premiere in Venice at the Festival in September, Nicole Kidman took home the Volpi Cup for Best Actress.

Kidman showed her vulnerable side in a Q&A session following a screening of the film, admitting she felt that filming 'Babygirl' had been overwhelming and intense at times. She revealed to 'People' it was "an enormous amount of trust" among her, the director, and co-stars. She described days on the set when, surrounded by actors and crew members, the scenes seemed so unpredictable that it felt like "jumping off a cliff." Kidman stated how she really challenged herself by exploring territory that was new for her as an actress, venturing into a genre she had never attempted before.

She went on to explain her approach, stating, "I've always been on a quest as an actor, constantly asking myself where I haven't been and what new things I can explore as a human being. This role was in an area I'd never been. Sometimes I had to let go of all my tasks and just trust the people around me. We wanted to cover new ground, especially since it was going to be a female director leading the way."

Co-star Harris Dickinson shares similar feelings about the shoot. He recalled that there were scenes when he was anxious himself. However, he added that the team always made sure everyone was comfortable, and if a scene did not feel right, they would step back and wait a while to get it right.

Babygirl is a movie centered on an apparently powerful and successful working woman-a businesswoman and a good wife. It will feature Nicole Kidman as the lead with Antonio Banderas as her husband, seeming almost great. But beneath the surface lies a different side of things. She starts carrying on with an intern at work, played by Julia Dickinson. Themes to be dealt with in this film directed by Halina Reijn are promised to be power dynamics, desire, and personal conflict.

A24 has slated the film for release in the U.S. on December 25, and already there is much chatter surrounding the film, especially around Kidman's fearless and heart-wrenching work in it. Given her profile thus far, with early accolades she is receiving for this role too, 'Babygirl' stands to be one of the candidates during the awards season.
