Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a Chicago-born Augustinian with deep roots in Peru, has been elected the 267th Bishop of Rome , taking the name Pope Leo XIV . His ascension marks a significant moment in the Catholic Church's 2,000-year history.

Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Robert Prevost grew up in a devout Catholic family. He was born to Louis Marius Prevost, of French and Italian descent, and Mildred Martínez, of Spanish descent. Pope Leo XIV has two brothers: Louis Martín and John Joseph.

The 267th Bishop of Rome is the first American and Peruvian pontiff. He is the first North American pope as well. He is also the first pope from an English speaking country.

Not just this, Pope Leo XIV is the first pope to be named Leo since Pope Leo XIII in early 1900s. He is also the first pope who is born after World War II.

A mathematics graduate from Villanova University in Pennsylvania, his early years were marked by a strong commitment to faith and service, leading him to join the Order of Saint Augustine in 1977. Ordained a priest in 1982, he embarked on a path that would take him far beyond the Midwest.

Prevost's journey led him to Peru, where he served as a missionary for over a decade. His work included teaching, pastoral care, and administrative roles within the Church. In 2015, he was appointed Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru, a position he held until 2023. His deep connection to the Peruvian people and fluency in Spanish earned him dual citizenship and a reputation as a bridge between cultures.

In 2023, Pope Francis appointed Prevost as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a significant role within the Vatican responsible for overseeing the selection of bishops worldwide. His leadership and dedication to pastoral care made him a respected figure among the College of Cardinals. Following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, the College of Cardinals convened for the papal conclave. On May 8, after two days of deliberation, Cardinal Prevost was elected pope. He chose the name Leo XIV, honoring previous popes who led during times of significant change.

In his first public address, which were ""Peace be with all of you!" Pope Leo XIV emphasized themes of peace, unity, and compassion. He called for a Church that embraces all people, regardless of background or status, and highlighted the importance of addressing global challenges such as migration and social inequality.
