NEW DELHI: Home minister Amit Shah on Monday emphasised the need to strengthen Hindi by developing a long-term policy for enhancement and preservation of Hindi literature and its grammatical forms and translating all modern education curricula into Hindi and other Indian languages.
Shah, while chairing the 32nd meeting of the Kendriya Hindi Samiti , a central government body that sets guidelines for the promotion and progressive use of Hindi language, underlined the inspiring transformation in the direction of language development in India, with Prime Minister Modi making it a point to air his views at various international fora only in Hindi and also engineering, medical, primary and secondary education now available in Indian languages. “This has created a favourable environment for the development of all languages in the country,” he stated at the meeting attended by Union ministers Jagat Prakash Nadda, Dharmendra Pradhan, Arjun Ram Meghwal and L Murugan; Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi; deputy chairman of parliamentary committee on official language Bhartruhari Mahtab; and senior officials.
Shah noted that it is essential for children and youths to study, analyse and make decisions in their mother tongue, so that their full potential for the country's development is realised.
Stating that Kendriya Hindi Samiti’ aim is to develop Hindi, preserve Hindi literature, and establish it as the country's link language, the home minister recalled three major initiatives of the Narendra Modi govt to empower Hindi, the first being the creation of a Hindi shabd sindhu dictionary , “which will be the most comprehensive dictionary in the world in five years”. Other steps include establishment of the Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag (Indian language section), which uses technology for two-way translation of govt files. The third major initiative is holding the official language conference in various parts of the country.
Kendriya Hindi Samiti’s role is to coordinate the works and programs implemented by various ministries and departments of the Government of India for the development and promotion of Hindi. The tenure of the Samiti, chaired by the Prime Minister, is generally three years. The current Samiti was reconstituted on November 9, 2021 with the Prime Minister, nine Union ministers, six chief ministers, and a deputy chairman of the parliamentary committee on official language, among its members.
