BAREILLY: A 45-year-old man sleeping under a tree by the roadside was allegedly buried alive under a heap of garbage after Bareilly municipal corporation workers dumped a pile of drain silt (waste) on him from a trolley.

Sunil Kumar Prajapati , who supported his family by selling vegetables in the UP city, died a painful death on the spot, his family said.

"The incident took place in Baradari area of Bareilly city. The body was sent for postmortem examination, and autopsy reports confirmed that the death was un-natural. It appears to be a case of negligence," said circle officer (city-III) Pankaj Srivastava.

"An FIR was registered under BNS section 106 (causing death by negligence) at the local police station in Baradari against sanitation contractor Nayeem Shastri after an initial probe Friday. We're taking action as per the law," the CO said.

In his complaint, Sunil's father, Girvar Singh Prajapati, said, "My son was sleeping under the tree opposite a cemetery on Thursday when the municipal corporation's trolley deliberately dumped waste on him. The municipal employees left without even checking. Incidentally, that spot was not fixed for dumping silt or garbage." He further said, "Later, we were shocked to find him buried under the waste. I took him to hospital, but he was already gone..."

A senior police officer said, "We are scanning the CCTV footage and trying to confirm whether it was a case of negligence or someone deliberately dumped the silt on the vegetable seller."
