In a possible hate crime, a 70-year-old Sikh man, Harpal Singh , was brutally beaten with a golf club in North Hollywood as he was going to a gurdwara, his place of worship. The attack took place on August 4, and the Sikh Community held a prayer for the recovery of Sinhgh, who is now in an induced coma, ABC7 reported.
Singh's brother, Dr Gurdial Singh Randhwa, said Harpal Singh barely survived the attack and has been in the hospital in critical condition, unresponsive. He underwent three surgeries for broken facial bones and bleeding in the brain.
A disturbing video from after the attack shows Singh sitting on the sidewalk in a pool of his own blood, with the weapon used in his attack still sitting at his feet. "Brutally attacked. I don't know how God saved him. He was almost dead," Singh Randhawa said.
"The fact that this happened and no one came to stop it until the point that Dr. Singh was just left in such critical condition, absolutely has spread fear in our community," said Munmeeth Kaur, the legal director of the Sikh Coalition, as quoted by ABC 7.
The incident took place at about 3.15 pm outside a 7-Eleven store near the intersection of Saticoy Street and Lankershim Boulevard.
Witnesses said that a man on a bicycle approached the 70-year-old and, for no reason, attacked the old man savagely with a golf club that he left behind. The old man was in a dazed condition, soaked in his own blood.
Detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department are now searching for the suspect who is wanted for assault with a deadly weapon. The surveillance footage showed the suspect to be a strongly built middle-aged man.
Friends of the victim said the 70-year-old enjoyed feeding birds in the parking lot behind the 7-Eleven store where he often walked to from his place of worship nearby.
